CAPS Horizon2020 Projects:

  • MAZI, Horizon2020 CAPS Project: a complementary to netCommons project aiming to build a DIY Networking toolkit for location-based collective awareness.
  • P2PValue FP7 CAPS Project: the goal of P2PValue is to develop a digital platform based on decentralized architecture and the design of public policies that promote the commons.

ICT Projects:

  • The RIFE Horizon2020 project addresses the major societal challenge of providing affordable Internet access to those who cannot afford it by solving the technological challenge to increase the efficiency of the underlying transport networks and the involved architectures and protocols.
  • The CONFINE FP7 FIRE Project (led by Leandro Navarro, UPC): the goal of CONFINE is to design and realize the Community-Lab, an experimental facility built on the federation of existing community networks that incorporate a large and wide variety of commodity wireless and optical links, heterogeneous nodes, different routing protocols, applications and a large number of end-users. CONFINE financed a number of sub-projects that performed mostly technical research on the Community-Lab, among which OSPS (led by Renato Lo Cigno, UniTn) that demonstrated that Community Networks can support advanced multimedia services such as real-time video and TV distribution.
  • The CLOMMUNITY FP7 FIRE Project (led by Felix Freitag, UPC): the goal of CLOMMUNITY is addressing the obstacles for communities of citizens in bootstrapping, running and expanding community-owned networks that provide community services organised as community clouds. The most visible outcome of the project is the development of the Cloudy community cloud distribution, used in WP3 of netCommons.
  • NAPA-WINE, FP7 STREP Project (participated by Renato Lo Cigno and UniTn) the goal of NAPA-WINE was to provide an analysis of the impact that a large deployment of both general P2P-TV and P2P-HQTV services may have on the Internet, and the realization of a P2P-TV system. The results of NAPA-WINE stemmed the open source project PeerStreamer, the platform adopted by WP3 of netCommons).

Multi-disciplinary projects:

  • EINS, the FP7 Network of Excellence in Internet Science: the goal of EINS was to strengthen scientific and technological excellence by developing an integrated and interdisciplinary scientific understanding of Internet networks and their co-evolution with society, and also by addressing the fragmentation of European research in this area. EINS also financed a number of sub-projects, among which COMPARE, coordinated by Panayotis Antoniadis (Nethood) that brought together researchers, practitioners, and activists interested in the topic of self-organization.
  • The two FP7 projects PACT and RESPECT (2011-2014) studied the role of privacy and surveillance in Europe. The UOW team was involved in these two projects and focused on studying privacy and surveillance on the Internet. These projects produced knowledge about how to conduct privacy and ethical assessments of information and communication technologies in the form of reports and a privacy impact assessment methodology.
  • BuBforEurope (Bottom-Up-Broadband for Europe) project, financed under the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme. It explored with users in real-life environments a mix of technologies like CNs, Sensor integration  and fiber deployment as commons (deliverable avilable here).
